MEMS DCO enables faster wireless charging

A digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) from SiTime, the SiT3901 cuts the wireless charging time of mobile and IoT devices by up to 25%. The digital control function of the MEMS device eliminates the need for additional passive components, reducing the timing solution area by as much as 90% compared to quartz oscillators.

Wireless charging standards, such as Qi and AirFuel, rely on resonant power transfer to enable proximity charging. However, environmental interference may dynamically impact the resonant charging frequency, which slows the charging process. The SiT3901 allows the charger to dynamically tune the resonant frequency, maximizing power transfer and improving wireless charging speed by up to 25%.

Part of SiTime’s µPower MEMS oscillator family, the SiT3901 provides a frequency range of 1 MHz to 26 MHz, programmable via a 1-wire tri-level serial interface. It also has a wide pull range of up to ±150,000 ppm and a tuning resolution as low as ±1 ppb.
