Product Spotlight: TimeFabric Precison Timing Software Suite Enhances System Performance and Utilization of AI Data Centers
Imagine a storm knocking out satellite signals—suddenly, systems that rely on GNSS, such as emergency dispatch, could face serious disruptions. Making electronic systems more resilient to environmental challenges and unexpected events is key to operations running smoothly when it matters most. Data centers face their own challenges: keeping groups of servers perfectly in sync so workloads run efficiently. Even small timing hiccups can cause data loss, duplicate work, system glitches or failures that can impact operations and the bottom line.
Enter the SiTime TimeFabric™ software suite which enhances Precision Timing on a system level. The end-to-end hardware and software solution delivers the most accurate and reliable Precision Timing to improve system efficiency and performance. Specifically, the holdover extension module, along with the IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) servo and stack module, enable critical data center, networking and communication systems to run without a hitch.
Why Is Holdover a Big Deal and How Does TimeFabric Improve It?
When systems experience issues that impact timing, it usually spells trouble. In the case of GNSS, when signals are disrupted by weather, signal interference or even cyberattacks, systems must rely on “holdover” to maintain accurate timing locally and ensure continuity of service until GNSS access is restored. Typically, a repair person needs 24 hours to make a service call for a failing or underperforming radio, for instance. Until now, achieving 24 hours of holdover performance required building redundancy into the network.
TimeFabric’s proprietary holdover extension software can be used to enhance the functionality of SiTime’s Precision Timing devices with in-field software upgrades, an accelerated deployment that supports service continuity across infrastructure nodes—without switching out any hardware or needing to build in redundancy. In fact, TimeFabric delivers up to 24 hours of holdover with SiT5811, SiT5812 or SiT7101 devices, twice the holdover capability of competing devices.
Sub-Nanosecond Synchronization Accuracy Changes the Load-Balancing Game for Network and Data Center Operators
The TimeFabric 1588 PTP module delivers superior synchronization for high-traffic networking environments such as AI data centers. Workload management suffers when workload tasks are farmed out without precise synchronization. Operators often must wait for the slowest job to finish because they can’t accurately track task completion in real time. This uncertainty causes computing resources to sit idle, wasting capacity and limiting efficiency.
SiTime’s proprietary servo and software stack is IEEE 1588 PTP standard-compliant at the Class D level – the highest level of performance defined by the standard. TimeFabric goes a step further, delivering sub-nanosecond synchronization accuracy, a faster network with up to 9X better synchronization than quartz offerings. This level of precision gives tighter control and greater timing stability over generic IEEE 1588 solutions. Network architects gain flexibility in network traffic scheduling and load balancing, which result in higher utilization, even in the most demanding systems.
