Complete Solution Combines Programmable 3-PLL Clock Generator with Embedded MEMS Resonator

SUNNYVALE, Calif.December 10, 2008 – SiTime Corporation, the leader in MEMS-based silicon timing solutions, announced that it is entering into the high-performance clock generator market with the introduction of the industry’s first MEMS-based programmable clock generators, the SiT9103 and SiT9104. These multi-PLL, multi-output, highly programmable timing solutions are the only such devices to integrate a MEMS resonator, eliminating external quartz completely and conserving up to 66 percent of board space. The SiT9103 and SiT9104 are being introduced today along with the SiT9102, the industry’s first differential output MEMS oscillator with an ultra-high frequency stability of +/- 10 PPM.

Both the SiT9103 and SiT9104 are clock generators with three independent PLLs that are capable of providing three unrelated clock frequencies. The SiT9103 provides three differential clock outputs that can operate at up to 800 MHz. Typical applications for the SiT9103 include servers, routers, RAID controllers, fiber channel, PCI-Express, Gigabit Ethernet and optical networking equipment. The SiT9104 provides six single-ended clock outputs, two from each PLL, which can operate at up to 220 MHz. The SiT9104 is designed for consumer electronics and computing applications such as digital and flat-panel televisions, DVD recorders, set-top boxes and printers. The SiT9103 and SiT9104 are the only multi-PLL clock generators to offer less than 1 picosecond of RMS phase jitter, a stringent timing requirement in most high performance applications.

SiTime’s SiT9103 and SiT9104 integrate several feature enhancements in a small form factor to simplify design, reduce board area and bill of material cost, and eliminate multiple components and suppliers. The products’ integrated PLLs combine the functionality of three external oscillators, while an integrated MEMS resonator eliminates the need for up to three external quartz crystals, associated circuitry and matching efforts. Each PLL and associated pair of clock outputs can be driven by independent voltage supplies (1.8V, 2.5V, 2.8V or 3.3V) and each output pair on the differential output SiT9103 can be configured to one of three signaling levels, LVPECL, LVDS or CML, eliminating the need for external level translators. These clock generators are available in a 22-pin Quad Flat No lead (QFN) package with a footprint of 7.0mm x 5.0mm.

“The $5 Billion timing market consists of three major product segments, resonators, oscillators and clock generators. The market is highly fragmented, and no single provider develops the technology to service all three segments,” said Piyush Sevalia, vice president of marketing at SiTime. “SiTime, with the SiT9103 and SiT9104 clock generators, is now the only silicon timing company that addresses all three major segments of the market.”

Both the SiT9103 and SiT9104 use SiTime’s proven MEMS technology to offer 10 times better robustness and reliability than existing quartz-based solutions, supporting longer-life electronics. The devices’ programmability also allows delivery of samples in 24 to 48 hours and production quantities in two to three weeks. Samples of both devices will be available in early February 2009.
