SiT8102 offers sub 1 ps RMS phase jitter in a 2.5 x 2.0 mm package suitible for high speed serial communication, video, and storage applications

SUNNYVALE , Cailf – September 24, 2007 – SiTime Corporation, the world’s leading innovator of MEMS-based timing solutions, has begun sampling a family of low jitter programmable oscillators targeting the high speed serial communication and storage markets. The SiT8102 oscillators offer sub 1 ps rms phase jitter performance over an integrated bandwidth. These oscillators are offered over a wide frequency range of 1 MHz to 200 MHz in a smaller footprint, thinner package and lower cost as compared to quartz-based oscillators or quartz crystals and associated high performance clocks chips.

Introducing the SiT8102
All SiT8102 oscillators contain the world’s most pervasive MEMS resonator and a CMOS IC that controls, drives, and frequency multiplies the MEMS resonator. This advanced architecture is one time factory programmable and generates any frequency between 1 MHz and 200 MHz with only +/-50 or +/-100 ppm frequency error inclusive of aging, power supply variation, and shock. Product family options also include: commercial and industrial temperature ranges; operating power supplies from 1.8 V, 2.5 V, or 3.3 V; and a power down mode or an output disable mode for lower power consumption.

SiT8102 Advantages
Programmable oscillators offer immediate frequency generation and lead-time benefits because they are stocked in high volume and frequency programmed on demand. However, traditional programmable oscillators have been limited to applications that could accept between +/-70 ps p-p jitter (10 ps rms) to +/-250 ps p-p jitter (30 ps rms) depending on the frequency.

The SiT8102 oscillator has much better jitter performance as compared to traditional programmable oscillators, evidenced by the performance table below.

This performance advancement now allows SiTime’s programmable oscillators to compete with traditional fixed-frequency quartz oscillators while still retaining the short lead times and high volume availability.

All of the customary benefits of SiTime’s MEMS First™ and EpiSeal™ processed resonators apply to the SiT8102 product family. These benefits include: excellent frequency performance over age, temperature, shock, vibration, and constant acceleration. Inside the package the resonator measures a mere 0.8 x 0.6 mm. As a result the oscillator family is able to be packaged in a tiny 2.5 x 2.0 x 0.8 mm QFN-type IC package. Larger industry standard package sizes are also available.

The combination of excellent jitter performance, tiny size, and mechanical robustness of the SiRes™ MEMS resonators, and low-cost IC packages compatible with quartz-based oscillator footprints make the SiT8102 oscillators ideal clock references for USB 2.0 HS, Firewire, Fibrechannel, SATA, PCI-Express, Gigabit Ethernet, and other high-speed serial communication protocols.
